Oregon Intervention System
What is the Oregon Intervention System?
The Oregon Intervention System (OIS) is a behavior intervention curriculum intended to assist people who support someone that may experience behavioral challenges across a variety of settings, including Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities services and various child-caring organizations.
OIS emphasizes an evidenced-based, positive, and proactive approach oriented around increasing the individual’s overall quality of life and promoting community inclusion, approaching each person’s needs on an individual basis, understanding the factors that contribute to human behavior, and implementing trauma-informed strategies in a manner that respects the rights and dignity of the supported individual.
The OIS curriculum includes a module-based classroom component, which includes opportunities for activities intended to help demonstrate core concepts as well as group discussion and participation. OIS also includes a physical skills component, if needed for your level of certifcation.
Note: The Oregon Intervention System, and all materials produced by OIS, are the property of the Oregon Department of Human Services. These materials may not be reproduced without written authorization, and any unauthorized reproduction of any OIS materials may be subject to legal recourse.
How do I know which level of OIS certification I need?
OIS includes four different levels of certification for workshop participants: Basic, General, Intermediate, and Advanced. If you are taking an OIS class because you work for an employer that requires OIS training, your employer may request certification at a specific level.
The Basic level of certification only includes the classroom based component of the curriculum, and does not include instruction on any of the OIS physical skills.
The General level of certification includes instruction on both the classroom based component of the OIS curriculum, as well as the physical skills component. Physical skills trained in this certification level include foundational skills, as well as evasions, deflections, escapes, releases, stabilizations, and barriers intended to help the support provider respond safely and appropriately to different forms of physically aggressive behavior.
The Intermediate level of certification includes instruction on all of the components included in the Basic and General levels of certification, as well as additional training on two OIS Protective Physical Intervention techniques, the Limb Control as well as the Belt-Shirt and Variations.
The Advanced levels of certification includes instruction on all of the components included in the previous levels of certification, as well as “a-la-carte” training on any of the physical skills included in the OIS curriculum.
For additional questions around which level of certification is right for you, please contact the instructor directly.
Will I receive a certificate after completing the workshop?
Upon successfully completing the OIS workshop, each participant will receive a physical or digital copy of their OIS certificate. Each certificate, once issued, belongs solely to the participant, regardless of whether or not that participant’s attendance in the workshop was paid for by another party.
What if I need a different level of certification later?
Once you have been certified in any level of OIS, that certification remains valid for two years. During that time, your certificate can be upgraded to the next level of certification by a qualified OIS instructor.
